Whitley Penn Talks: How the Texas Hill Country Is Rebuilding After Tragedy

10/08/2026

Isaac Cline, a 19th‑century Galveston meteorologist, is known for saying, “Texas is a land of eternal drought, interrupted occasionally by biblical floods.” In the summer of 2025 and again in 2026, Cline’s proclamation sadly came true as massive, deadly floods struck Kerr County, Kerrville, Uvalde, and many more towns and counties across the Texas Hill Country.

Once the water receded, the long process of rebuilding began.

In this episode of WP Cares, Emily Landry sits down with Austin Dickson, CEO of the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, to discuss the ongoing recovery efforts following the devastating 2025 and 2026 floods.

Austin shares how the Community Foundation responded in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, the long-term work underway to help families rebuild their homes and lives, and the critical role philanthropy plays in strengthening communities during times of crisis. From housing assistance and mental health support to environmental restoration and community resilience, this conversation highlights the impact of generosity and collaboration across Texas.

Austin also shares his personal journey into nonprofit leadership, offers practical advice for nonprofit organizations seeking to better communicate their impact, and explains why focusing on results rather than activity is essential for creating lasting change.

This episode offers an inspiring look at how people can come together to help their communities heal and move forward.

Takes from the Talk

What does a community foundation do?

A community foundation connects donors, nonprofits, and community leaders to address local needs and create long-term impact. For example, the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country supports nonprofit organizations, awards scholarships, works with charitable donors, and invests in solutions that improve quality of life across the region.

How does philanthropy help communities recover after a disaster?

Philanthropy plays a critical role in both immediate relief and long-term recovery. Following the Texas Hill Country floods, charitable funding supported emergency assistance, housing recovery, mental health services, environmental restoration, and rebuilding efforts designed to help families and communities recover over time.

How can nonprofit organizations tell their story more effectively?

Keep communications simple, consistent, and transparent. Nonprofits don’t need complicated marketing strategies to share their impact. Regular website updates, social media posts, blogs, and stories that show real outcomes can help donors and volunteers understand both the mission and the difference their support makes.

How can donors decide where to give?

Donors can begin by identifying what they are passionate about. Whether someone cares about education, hunger relief, environmental conservation, animal welfare, housing, or youth services, understanding personal values can make charitable giving more meaningful and help connect donors with organizations making a measurable impact.

How can I support Texas Hill Country recovery efforts?

People can contribute through financial donations, volunteer opportunities, and community partnerships. There are opportunities to support housing recovery, mental health services, environmental restoration, and tree-planting initiatives that will help rebuild and strengthen the Texas Hill Country for years to come.

Why is long-term recovery important after a natural disaster?

Disaster recovery doesn’t end after emergency response efforts conclude. Rebuilding homes, restoring mental health services, supporting local businesses, and repairing environmental damage can take years. Long-term recovery focuses on helping communities regain stability and resilience while preparing for future challenges.
